Surface structures with mechanical and adhesive connections
If we want to consider the grey energy content of building materials in architectural design, what types of lightweight construction can we implement with flat building materials? Folded load-bearing structures are surprisingly strong and curved folds can contribute to the stiffening of surfaces. The geometry of unfoldable surfaces folded along a curve has not yet been fully explored in mathematics. However, there are a few simple geometric concepts that can be designed using CAD software.
This design is about how to use these methods to design a small architectural project. Can we go beyond design to address sustainability conceptually by addressing grey energy components thematically and visualising them in the context of a small project?
Students will produce working models and prototypes that address issues in digital fabrication after two workshops. Group work of 2 to 4 students is allowed. Paper and cardboard models will be produced by laser cutting. Knowledge of Rhino3d is recommended, knowledge of Grasshopper is advantageous.
