Dokumentarfilm, „… et Pierre Jeanneret“ Frankreich 2023, DCP, F/E, 99’
Shortly after India’s independence, after the partition, Jawaharlal Nehru demanded a city for 150,000 inhabitants. He demanded an entire city, a capital: Chandigarh. He wanted a ‘symbol of India’s liberation’, a new city for a new people, liberated from British colonisation and partition. With this request, he turned to Corbusier, who asked Pierre Jeanneret to build Chandigarh. Together with some English architects and the young Indian architects they trained, Pierre Jeanneret designed and built tens of thousands of houses, hospitals, libraries, cinemas, shops, administrative buildings and so on. They had the idea of a new ecological city in which 500,000 trees would be planted, a new city that would combine Western modernity with Indian culture.
The film ‘… et Pierre Jeanneret’ is a documentary essay, a poetic film that combines literature and cinema. On a walk through the streets and buildings of Chandigarh and through the daily lives of its inhabitants, ‘… et Pierre Jeanneret’ sets out to meet the architect.
Original text by Christian Barani, translated from French.
Christian Barani’s practice combines documentary film and visual art. His production process is a performative apparatus that creates images without preconceptions. It is about letting yourself drift and experimenting with a body/camera that moves through space. It defines the rules of the game, which are based on chance and improvisation. At the end of the experiment, the material is collected from images and sounds. It takes on different forms depending on the project to be realised.
