He is an Associate Professor of Construction and Design and Chair of the Masters in Architectural Tectonics program (MAT) at the Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University in Ahmedabad, India. His interest bridges the realms of academic inquiry and hands-on practice, and he is deeply committed to materiality, craftsmanship, and the innovative dimensions of architecture.
In the early stages of his career, he spent several years immersed in the rural landscapes of eastern Bihar, collaborating closely with artisans and local communities. This experience cultivated a deep understanding of indigenous building materials and techniques, shaping his lasting interest in the intersection of material processes and human engagement.
In his teaching, he emphasises the value of learning through making. His pedagogy encourages students to engage directly with modelling techniques and fine detailing, allowing form to emerge through the structure and construction process. His research extends this ethos by focusing on innovative applications of traditional materials—most recently, the structural potential of split bamboo for construction in India.
He has contributed to several book chapters on construction and technology and has presented his research internationally, including at the World Bamboo Congress 2024 and ISVS 2025. He and his collaborators—students and fellow tutors—hold multiple design registration patents, demonstrating a collective approach to innovation. Beyond academia, he has guided government bodies and NGOs on housing and construction policy.
He co-founded Thumbimpressions LLP with three colleagues, an award-winning collaborative design and construction practice recognised for its thoughtful engagement with vernacular knowledge. The firm has received accolades, including the Emerging Architecture Practice in India Award (2024), ID Honours for Vernacular Design (2025), and the Merit List Awards (2024). Their work is widely published on platforms such as ArchDaily and Stir.
A lifetime member of the Bamboo Society of India, Sankalpa also serves on the board of Karigarshala—an organisation dedicated to fostering artisanal skills among youth outside the formal education system.

Bild: https://www.thumbimpressions.org/design/yogashaala/

Sankalpa CEPT University Ahmedabad Disassembling Bamboo Di 18.03.2025 14:30 über Zoom Meeting-ID: 627 6198 5251 Passwort: Bamboo2025 Sankalpa is an academic and practising architect.
