Architecture has a socio-political presence in France. Presidents have manifested the visibility and status of the built environment through their initiative:

Georges Pompidou with the Centre Pompidou, Francois Mitterand with the Grands Projets, the French National Library, the expansion of the Louvre, the Grand Arche in the Defence, Jacques Chirac with the Museum at Quai Branly.

Eight protagonists of current French architecture will come to the TU Vienna.

They represent different approaches to architecture and at the same time several generations.

They will explain themselves through reports on their work and their architectural attitude.

Muoto attracted international attention with the Campus Hub in Saclay and the French Pavilion at the current Venice Biennale.

Marc Barani and Ibos Vitart are known for their uncompromisingly clear architectural language and were awarded the Grand Prix national de l'architecture for their work.

Jacquelin Osty is a landscape architect. The close link between landscape and architecture is the basis of new urban developments in France. The high quality of the urban environment relativises the importance of the buildings as objects.  

Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost is a designer and artistic director of the architecture firm DPA. As a partner, she occupies a significant position in Dominique Perrault's studio.

Dominique Alba, through her multi-faceted activity - architectural advisor to the city of Paris, director of the Pavillon de l'Arsenal, head of urban development for Paris APUR and, more recently, director of Jean Nouvel's office - brings aspects that form the basis of the positioning of architecture.

Together with her partner Pascal Rollet, Florence Lipsky represents a pronounced constructive approach that is atypical for France. The engagement with young architects, the apprenticeship, occupies an important place in their work.

Lina Ghotmeh, architect born in Beirut, experiments with a new interpretation of materiality.

Mit seiner besonderen Herangehensweise an das Bauen hat sich Belgien in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu einem interessanten, vielschichtigen Ziel für einen aktuellen Architekturdiskurs entwickelt. Wir werden dies im Rahmen einer Exkursion zur zeitgenössischen Architektur in Flandern mit Schwerpunkt auf konstruktiv anspruchsvolle Gebäude erkunden. Die Exkursion beginnt und endet in Brüssel und wird voraussichtlich die Städte Brüssel, Antwerpen, Gent, Oostende umfassen.

After having studied Architecture and Scenography, Marc Barani completed his training by attending studies of anthropology which have led him to Nepal. His staff is multidisciplinary and gathers, according to the projects, architects, scenographers, designers and landscapers. The atelier works on projects of very various sizes and types, as public and transport infrastructures, housing, civil engineering structures. Marc Barani has taught architecture from 1993 to 2003 and has been extensively involved in the Ministry of Culture and Communication especially in the new National Strategy for Architecture (SNA).

Muoto's work features minimal structures that can combine different activities, evolve in time, and merge economical and aesthetic issues. lts activities cover the fields of architecture, urban planning, design, teaching and scientific research. Since its establishment, the office has realized various projects ranging from master plans, public buildings, housing, and installations. Recently, it has been selected to curate the French pavilion at the 2023 Venice Biennale.

Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes is a studio that highlights the pleasure of building and pays tribute to everyone involved in the creation of a work of architecture: the building workers and craftsmen, the engineers, the clients, and of course the architects themselves. Structure, which is the essential element of construction, characterizes its projects. It creates unexpected and surprising opportunities. Its on-site assembly is also part of the process. The studio’s fascination with these key stages is clearly presented in the films and illustrations. This constructive approach is evident in the studio’s work. Their buildings, bridges and walkways all bear witness to this. The lightness and precision of structure is a predominant element in the overall composition. All the technical components are visible—the ducting of ventilation, water and electricity— and they become elements that organize the space and testify to the contribution of the workers. The meticulous attention to detail reflects the skill of the craftsmen, their expertise. The architectural language is direct and powerful: a raw, visible materiality makes the composition legible and softens spaces. It facilitates future adaptations and encourages re-use. Since its creation the studio has been rigorous in its use of natural lighting and ventilation and its pursuit of energy efficiency. Lightness and transparency are everywhere.

nach einer kurzen präsentation von archxchange lassen wir, vor dem haupteingang der tu wien, am nachmittag den semesterabschluss ausklingen.

Die Struktur bringt die Arbeit von Studierenden in den öffentlichen Raum vor der Universität, wird zum Podium, Treffpunkt, Schnittstelle von TU-Studierenden mit der interessierten Öffentlichkeit am Karlsplatz und schafft einen Ort, an dem Diskussionen im öffentlichen Raum geführt werden können, die sich mit der generellen Verantwortung der Architekt*innen in Bezug auf Nachhaltigkeit beschäftigen. Kolleg*innen, aber auch ein breites öffentliches Publikum werden in Diskussionen involviert, die in Frage stellen, wie wir uns als Gesellschaft auf Lösungen einigen können, die unsere notwendige gebaute Infrastruktur reduzieren.

Das ca. 40m² große Projekt gilt als Prototyp, der sichtbar machen soll, wie Geometrie im Einklang mit digitaler Herstellung zu sehr leichten Konstruktionen führen kann. Die Konstruktion wird mit Fundermax HPL Platten ausgeführt, die zu leichten Bauelementen zusammengebaut werden, die von kleinen Teams errichtet werden können.

An architectural space that reflects sustainability, ecology and future visions - that is ve.sh pavilion. The project was developed in line with a dynamic programme for public spaces. The spatial formulation is based on an in-depth analysis of geometric and constructive principles, which were consolidated with the architectural principles. The resulting pavilion addresses current discourses and areas of tension in architecture and spatial planning, such as temporary places in public space, spatial generosity and resource conservation, as well as constructive finesse and detailing. The pavilion arose from the premise of reusing building materials, which is also reflected in the programme.

Die Darstellung eines Sachverhalts ist schon eine Form der Erkenntnis

Seit 2000 Jahren werden die Tätigkeiten von Künstlern und Wissenschaftlern – eine protohumanistische Position – nicht im Erkenntnisinteresse unterschieden, sondern in der Erkenntnisstiftung durch Darstellung der Gegenstände des Interesses.

Wie beginnt man? Durch Rückerinnerung an die Arbeitsformen der Vorgänger. Das nennt man Wiederauferstehenlassen, französisch: Renaissance. Aber Renaissance ist kein Epochen-, sondern ein Strukturbegriff für die Bearbeitung der Frage: Wie kommt das Neue in die Welt? Generalisiert müssen wir also von Renaissancen sprechen und nicht von einem bestimmten historischen Geschehen.

Von Platons Behauptung, dass Erkenntnis durch eine Rückerinnerung an „Ideen“ (als Prototypen des Möglichen) gewonnen werde, über die Methodik der Memorialtheater (Beispiel Robert Fludd) bis zur Psychodynamik der Erinnerung nach Freud leiten sich die heutigen Bestimmungen für die Einheit der Welt jenseits der bekannten dialektischen Verfahren ab – also etwa die Einheit von Alt und Neu, die Bestimmbarkeit des Ewigen als Zeitform oder die zu seinem Wirken notwendige Menschwerdung Gottes.

Zwei Verfahren haben sich als besonders leistungsfähig erwiesen: Mathematik als naturwissenschaftliche Theologie und Embodiment/Verkörperungszwänge des Geistes, denn endlich ist neurophysiologisch erwiesen, dass es keinen unverkörperten Geist geben kann. Wissenschaftler und Künstler sind gleichermaßen kreativ in der Entwicklung von Verfahren des Embodiments. Gibt es unter diesen Verfahren eine Rangigkeit – historisch etwa als Paragone behauptet?

Bazon Brock, Denker im Dienst und Künstler ohne Werk, ist emeritierter Professor am Lehrstuhl für Ästhetik und Kulturvermittlung an der Bergischen Universität Wuppertal. Weitere Professuren an der Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (1965–1976) und der Universität für angewandte Kunst, Wien (1977–1980). 1992 erhielt er die Ehrendoktorwürde der Eidgenössisch Technischen Hochschule, Zürich und 2012 die Ehrendoktorwürde der Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe. 2014 bekam er die Honorarprofessur für Prophetie an der HBKsaar, Saarbrücken und 2016 wurde ihm der Von der Heydt-Preis der Stadt Wuppertal verliehen. 2017 erhielt er das Österreichische Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst 1. Klasse.

Er entwickelte die Methode des »Action Teaching«, bei dem der Seminarraum zur Bühne für Selbst- und Fremdinszenierungen wird. Von 1968 bis 1992 führte er in Kassel die von ihm begründeten documenta-Besucherschulen durch. Von 2010 bis 2013 leitete er das Studienangebot „Der professionalisierte Bürger“ an der HfG Karlsruhe. Rund 3000 Veranstaltungen und Aktionslehrstücke; zuletzt u.a. „Lustmarsch durchs Theoriegelände“ (2006, in elf Museen). Er repräsentiert das „Institut für theoretische Kunst, Universalpoesie und Prognostik“, und ist Gründer der Denkerei / Amt für Arbeit an unlösbaren Problemen und Maßnahmen der hohen Hand mit Sitz in Berlin.

Die 2016 entstandene Installation „Synästhesieraum“ ist eine gemeinschaftliche Arbeit von Hermann Nitsch und Frank Gassner, welche zu einer sinnlichen audio-visuellen Erfahrung einlädt.

mit der vortragsreihe ‚aus dem archiv‘ lädt. prof. hemma fasch zu einer rückschau und gleichzeitig fortsetzung einer großen tradition im interdisziplinären architekturexkurs.

die erfolgreiche ‚internationale vortragsreihe‘ wurde von helmut richter (vorstand des instituts hb2 von 1991 – 2007) 1992 ins leben gerufen. er lud renommierte konstrukteurinnen, designerinnen, architektinnen, künstlerinnen aus europa, den usa und japan ein. über 16 jahre fand die vortragsreihe bei studierenden und bei der interessierten öffentlichkeit großen anklang.

der fachbereich hb2 hat nun die filme, die damals auf video hi8 aufgenommen wurden, digitalisiert, und lädt zur gemeinsamen rückschau.

Wolf dPrix, Helmut Swiczinsky und Michael Holzer gründeten 1968 in Wien gemeinsam das Büro COOP HIMMELB(L)AU und arbeiteten an Projekten in den Bereichen Architektur, Stadtplanung, Design und Kunst. 1988 wurde ein weiteres Büro in Los Angeles eröffnet, später kamen Niederlassungen in Frankfurt am Main und in Paris, sowie in Beijing und Dubai dazu. Heute wird das Büro von Wolf dPrix, Harald Krieger, Karolin Schmidbauer und Alexander Ott geleitet. Nach mehreren internationalen Lehraufträgen war Wolf dPrix von 1993 bis 2012 Professor für Architekturentwurf an der Angewandten in Wien.

Mit einer Einladung zur Ausstellung „Deconstructivist Architecture“ im MoMA New York im Jahr 1988 gelang COOP HIMMELB(L)AU der internationale Durchbruch. Seither hat das Büro in zahlreichen Ländern Museen, Konzerthäuser, Forschungs- und Verwaltungsgebäude realisiert. Zu den bekanntesten Werken gehören der Dachausbau Falkestraße in Wien, der multifunktionale Dresdner UFA Kinopalast, die BMW Welt in München, die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB) in Frankfurt/ Main, das Akron Art Museum in Ohio, das Musée de Confluences in Lyon, die Central Los Angeles Area High School #9 for the Visual and Performing Arts, der Busan Cinema Komplex in Korea, das Dalian International Conference Center in China sowie das House of Music in Aalborg, Dänemark.

Neben zahlreichen temporären Ausstellungen, werden Arbeiten von COOP HIMMELB(L)AU unter anderem in der Getty Foundation in Los Angeles, im Centre Pompidou in Paris und im MAK in Wien permanent gezeigt. Im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte wurden Wolf dPrix und das Team COOP HIMMELB(L)AU mit zahlreichen internationalen Architekturpreisen ausgezeichnet.

Wolf dPrix sprach am 03.05.1999 im Rahmen der ‚internationalen Vortragsreihe‘ an der TU Wien über die Arbeiten von COOP HIMMELB(L)AU.

He invited renowned constructors, designers, architects and artists from Europe, the USA and Japan. For 16 years, the lecture series was very well received by students and the interested public.

The HB2 department has now digitised the films, which were recorded on Hi8 video back then, and invites you to look back together.

The Austrian Steel Construction Award for Students aims to promote forward-looking and experimental projects from the disciplines of architecture, civil engineering and art and to make them publicly visible.

In terms of content, the prize is open to artistic positions, spatial visions and constructive experiments, as well as everything in between. The focus is on the potential of steel and metal materials - technical performance and recyclability.
Projects from past and current semesters can be submitted in the categories Upcycle & Recycle and Space & Structure.

Awards will be given to outstanding student works that think exciting worlds and formulate convincing arguments to continue writing steel construction culture and carry it into the future.

Total prize money: € 9,000

Interdisciplinary jury with experts and students from the fields of art, architecture and civil engineering.

Award ceremony: 15.06.2023 (33rd Austrian Steel Construction Day in Graz)

Projects and final theses that have been completed since October 2020 as part of a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme at an Austrian university in the fields of architecture, civil engineering and art may be submitted.

With the lecture series 'aus dem archiv' invites. Prof. Hemma Fasch to a retrospective and at the same time continuation of a great tradition in the interdisciplinary architecture course.

The successful 'International Lecture Series' was initiated by Helmut Richter (Director of the Institute HB2 from 1991 - 2007) in 1992. He invited renowned constructors, designers, architects and artists from Europe, the USA and Japan. For 16 years, the lecture series was very well received by students and the interested public.

The HB2 department has now digitised the films, which were recorded on Hi8 video back then, and invites you to look back together.

Mit der Vortragsreihe ‚aus dem archiv‘ lädt. Prof. Hemma Fasch zu einer Rückschau und gleichzeitig Fortsetzung einer großen Tradition im interdisziplinären Architekturexkurs.

Die erfolgreiche ‚Internationale Vortragsreihe‘ wurde von Helmut Richter (Vorstand des Instituts HB2 von 1991 – 2007) 1992 ins Leben gerufen. Er lud renommierte KonstrukteurInnen, DesignerInnen, ArchitektInnen, KünstlerInnen aus Europa, den USA und Japan ein. Über 16 Jahre fand die Vortragsreihe bei Studierenden und bei der interessierten Öffentlichkeit großen Anklang.

Der Fachbereich HB2 hat nun die Filme, die damals auf Video Hi8 aufgenommen wurden, digitalisiert, und lädt zur gemeinsamen Rückschau.

Shigeru Ban studierte Architektur in Los Angeles und in New York City und arbeitet seit 1985 selbstständig. Er ist Professor an der Kyoto University of Art and Design und an der Keio University in Tokio. In der Vergangenheit hatte Shigeru Ban zahlreiche Lehrbeauftragungen und Gastprofessuren unter anderem an der Harvard, der Columbia, der Cornell, der Nihon, der Tama und der Yokohama Universität. Er gründete das Voluntary Architects‘ Network, eine Katastrophenhilfe durch Konstruktionen, und neben vielen Notunterkünften zählt das Centre Pompidou in Metz zu seinen bekanntesten Projekten. 2014 erhielt er den Pritzker Preis. Shigeru Ban sprach am 25.05.2006 im Rahmen der internationalen Vortragsreihe an der TU Wien über seine Arbeiten.

Hugh is one of the world’s leading designers of research facilities in Antarctica. He will explain his work for the British, New Zealand, Australian and American programs, focussing on the environmental, logistic and well-being challenges of construction in the harshest, most extreme continent on earth. His talk will also review the similarities of designing for Antarctica with designing for space and will show a recent collaboration with artists in Bristol, constructing a prototype house for Mars.

Hugh Broughton founded Hugh Broughton Architects in 1995. The practice is based in West London. In 2005 Hugh’s practice won an international competition for the design of the UK’s most southerly Antarctic research station – Halley VI. The modular elevated base was completed in 2012 and is the world’s first fully relocatable polar research facility.

Hugh’s practice has gone on to win a string of design competitions for remote projects and is now considered one of the world’s leading designers of research facilities in the Polar Regions. His projects include:

• Halley VI Antarctic Research Station for the British Antarctic Survey
• Juan Carlos 1 Spanish Antarctic Base for the Ministry of Scientific Investigation
• Atmospheric Watch Observatory in Greenland for the US National Science Foundation
• Modernisation of Rothera Research Station for British Antarctic Survey
• Scott Base Redevelopment for Antarctica New Zealand
• Antarctic Infrastructure Renewal Program for the Australian Antarctic Division

Hugh has won over 50 international awards for his designs. His work has been published around the world and has been featured in numerous exhibitions and on television and radio. He has lectured worldwide on the work of his practice, and regularly sits on award and competition juries.

Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber is an artist collective consisting of the sculptor Christoph Steinbrener, the photographer and graphic artist Rainer Dempf and the architect Martin Huber. Their works in public space have repeatedly caused quite a stir. They report on the project development processes and their strategies.

In their works, Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber address the commercialisation of urban space, the relationship between civilisation and nature. In recent years, the devastation of cities and landscapes by tourism has been a repeated theme in projects and exhibitions.

After the "Capricorn Two" at the Bismarck Monument in Hamburg (2015), the Siegestor in Munich, which has become questionable in the face of war, is now commented on with the installation "Victory Spikes".  For the past 10 years, Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber have also been running the wall newspaper, an exhibition project in public space, in the shop windows of their Gassenlokal studio in Vienna's 2nd district.

The module Emerging Fields in Architecture conveys current knowledge from new research fields in architectural and engineering disciplines, with the aim of dealing with current and future design challenges in a broader social context in an interdisciplinary and fundamental way. The lectures impart knowledge about different and interdisciplinary approaches to design, current developments and results of material and construction research, about planning and building under/in extreme conditions as well as about structures that change or develop due to changing parameters.

In this context, strategies for design (from the initial idea to implementation) are questioned in an interdisciplinary discourse, and the question of how the path from idea to realisation can be shaped and to what extent it is possible to be systematically creative is explored.

Through a series of film excerpts, Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine will present their evolving cinematographic research, from their first well-known films revealing the daily intimacy within contemporary iconic buildings to their ongoing film series « Homo Urbanus » observing the cultural variations towards our essential needs, behaviors and habits in relation to urban space. Talking about their unique and radical position against the main strategies of representation in architecture they will explain their working methodology as filmmakers and independent producers.

Angesichts der Krisen der Gegenwart ist es leicht, nur noch an dem festzuhalten, was wir haben. Aber in jeder Krise liegt auch die Möglichkeit, andere Perspektiven, Denkräume und Möglichkeiten zu entwickeln. Vielleicht liegt die erfolgreichste Anpassung an neue Umstände in dem Mut, riskante Neuanfänge zu denken.

Nach Stationen in Hamburg, Detmold, Oxford, London und Paris lebt der Schriftsteller und Historiker seit vielen Jahren in Wien. Seine Bücher wurden in 16 Sprachen übersetzt. Zusätzlich war er als Lektor, Übersetzer, Kurator, Moderator, Filmemacher, Journalist und Auslandskorrespondent tätig, was ihn an verschiedene Orte in Europa und Amerika führte.

Das Modul Emerging Fields in Architecture vermittelt aktuelles Wissen aus neuen Forschungsfeldern in architektur- und ingenieurswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, mit dem Ziel aktuelle und zukünftige Entwurfsherausforderungen im breiteren gesellschaftlichen Kontext fachübergreifend und grundlegend zu bearbeiten. Die Vorlesungen vermitteln Kenntnisse über unterschiedliche und fachübergreifende Zugänge zur Entwurfsfindung, aktuelle Entwicklungen und Resultate der Material- und Bauweisenforschung, über das Planen und Bauen unter/in extremen Bedingungen sowie über Strukturen die sich aufgrund von wechselnden Parametern verändern bzw. entwickeln.
In diesem Zusammenhang werden Strategien zur Entwurfsfindung (von der ersten Idee bis zur Umsetzung) im interdisziplinären Diskurs hinterfragt, und der Frage nachgegangen wie sich der Weg von der Idee zur Realisierung gestalten kann und inwieweit es möglich ist systematisch kreativ zu sein.

Werner Sobek studierte Architektur und Bauingenieurwesen an der Universität Stuttgart. Danach war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Sonderforschungsbereich SFB 64 Weitgespannte Flächentragwerke ebendort. 1987 promovierte er im Bauingenieurwesen, wurde 1991 an die Universität Hannover und ab 1994 an die Universität Stuttgart als Professor berufen, wo er die Nachfolge von Frei Otto antrat. Im Jahr 2000 übernahm er einen zweiten Lehrstuhl als Nachfolger von Jörg Schlaich an der Universität Stuttgart und gründete dort das Institut für Leichtbau Entwerfen und Konstruieren (ILEK), welches sich vorwiegend mit der konzeptionellen und werkstoffübergreifenden Entwicklung von allen Arten von Bauweisen und Tragstrukturen befasst. Werner Sobek war unter anderem auch Gastprofessor an Universitäten in Graz, Singapur, Hamburg sowie an der Harvard University. Das Büro Werner Sobek beschäftigt heute mehr als 400 Mitarbeiter:innen weltweit, die an innovativen konstruktiven Lösungen und integralen Konzepten zur Minimierung von Emissionserzeugung und Materialverbrauch bei der Planung von Tragwerken, Fassaden und Technischer Gebäudeausrüstung arbeiten.

Lecture Kjetil Trædal Thorsen - Snøhetta

Kjetil Trædal Thorsen was born in Haugesund (N) in 1958, studied at the Graz University of Technology and co-founded the architectural practice Snøhetta in 1989. The Oslo Opera House, the Lascaux IV Museum and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina are among the numerous international award-winning projects. In addition to international teaching assignments, he was a professor at the Institute for Experimental Architecture at the University of Innsbruck from 2004 to 2008.

Public space is a fundamental framework condition for a functioning democratic society.

In rural areas, public space certainly had an important status: churchyards and marketplaces were places of encounter and exchange. Today, this seems to have been lost; the appreciation of rural areas from the perspective of urban society is mostly limited to opportunities for simple recreation or affordable housing.

In order to make the "province" an attractive place to live again and thus also to help the necessary mobility turnaround, new forms of public space in the countryside are needed. What kind of programming do such places need and how can a reference to the specific context be established in order to create identity-forming spaces?

Lecture Wolfgang Feyferlik and Susanne Fritzer - Feyferlik/Fritzer

Wolfgang Feyferlik (architecture studies at the TU Graz until 1985) and Susanne Fritzer (architecture studies at the TU Graz until 1994) founded the office Feyferlik | Fritzer in 1994.

Among the most important joint projects are the renovation and adaptation of the Basilica and the Geistliches Haus in Mariazell (1992-2018), the new construction of the elementary school and sports club in Bad Blumau (2006-2010) and the new construction and reconstruction of the elementary school Dorf in Lauterach (2012-2018). Numerous projects have repeatedly been awarded the ZV Austria Building Award and nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award. For the Mariazell project, Feyferlik | Fritzer was awarded the Architecture Prize of the Province of Styria in 2019. In 2013, VS Bad Blumau received the Better Learning Worlds Award; in 2019, VS Dorf Lauterach was awarded the State Prize for Architecture and Sustainability.

Feyferlik | Fritzer taught, among others, at the TU Graz, at the RWTH Aachen, at the TU Innsbruck and currently at the TU Vienna, at the Research Department Structural Engineering - Construction and Design.

Vortrag Dietmar Feichtinger - Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes

Alles ist Architektur?

Dietmar Feichtinger studied architecture at Graz University of Technology until 1988. After working with Eilfried Huth, Volker Giencke and Klaus Kada, he moved to Paris in 1989, where he worked with Chaix & Morel. Together with Barbara Feichtinger he founded Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes 1994 in Paris and 2002 Feichtinger Architectes Vienna.  With numerous award-winning projects the office is recognized in an international context.

Dietmar Feichtinger has been teaching at various universities since 1994, such as the University of Paris VI - La Villette, the RWTH Aachen University, the University of Innsbruck and the TU Vienna.
In 2021, Dietmar Feichtinger was a guest professor at our department teaching the master's design studio  "univer-city, structures for learning and teaching".

short biography

Volker Giencke studied architecture and philosophy in Graz and Vienna. After working with Merete Mattern, Raimund Herms and Günther Domenig, he founded the studio Giencke & Company Architects in Graz in 1981. In addition to numerous teaching assignments and lectures at international universities, he has been a professor at the University of Innsbruck since 1992 at the Institute for Structural Engineering and Design. Volker Giencke spoke about his work on May 4, 1998, as part of the international lecture series at the Audimax of the Vienna University of Technology.

With the lecture series 'aus dem archiv' invites. Prof. Hemma Fasch to a retrospective and at the same time continuation of a great tradition in the interdisciplinary architecture course.
The successful 'International Lecture Series' was initiated by Helmut Richter (Director of the Institute HB2 from 1991 - 2007) in 1992. He invited renowned constructors, designers, architects, artists from Europe, the USA and Japan. Over 16 years, the lecture series was well received by students and the interested public.

The HB2 department has now digitized the first films, which were recorded on Hi8 video at the time, and invites you to look back together.

short biography
Mike Davies studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and in Los Angeles. He joined Piano Rogers in 1972 and founded Richard Rogers Partnership with Richard Rogers, John Young and Marco Goldschmied in 1977. Mike Davies spoke about his work on June 4, 1992 as part of the international lecture series at the Audimax of the Vienna University of Technology.

Cedric Price (1934 - 2003) studied architecture at Cambridge University and at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He later taught at the AA himself and founded a practice in 1960. Among his best-known works is the Fun Palace from 1961, which influenced Richard Rogers, among others. Cedric Price spoke about his work on May 3, 1995 as part of the international lecture series in the Audimax of the Vienna University of Technology.

The reactivation of places that were believed to be lost and (previously) inaccessible space sources requires new accessibility for everyone and generates potential for new, any-scale infrastructures. Public space must remain public and accessible to everyone, and therefore has to be occupied and its qualities demonstrated. Architecture is the means of choice. At a specific location in Vienna- famous Ringstraße -, the existing (urban) space is to be made accessible and usable for the public by means of an architectural intervention. Vienna´s Ringstraße stretches at least between the programme of the Burgtheater and the demonstration calendar of the democratic society. Strongly courted by tourists, the Ring tends to rest in its laurels and has long since accepted the expensive, sometimes outdated cultural offerings as the norm for a few. Trespassing Grounds asks which programs and interventions can be used to realize a city for everyone here in the dense, inner-city context.

The functional program will be designed according to the location and is committed to possible daily (pleasure) infrastructures for a post-consumption society. We are searching for proposals for the good life: infrastructure facilities with a public and climate-resilient program.

The designs will be situated somewhere between nature and architecture, resource conservation and spatial generosity and will be architecturally expressed through concrete- utopian, public-social spatial structures.

In this course, the contents of the bachelor's program and the studios and the competencies acquired from them are combined to form complex architectural tasks. The course teaches the ability to understand architecture as a process in which the prerequisites and goals of a design task are processed architecturally and in terms of urban development. A design is developed on the basis of a creative concept as well as taking into account social, spatial, constructive and technical requirements.

The concrete theme of the design is an examination of the Vienna Ringstrasse, which is to lead from the urban history to the socio-political role of the site to a new architectural intervention.

The search for a suitable building site is an integral part of the design task.

Commercial-free spaces, a building structure for all people, the interweaving with the adjacent urban space as well as the creation of attractive outdoor spaces are to define a functional direction.

Vienna's Ringstrasse was laid out as a magnificent boulevard and promenade and, with its many important buildings for culture, education and politics, was an impetus for its development into a cosmopolitan city.

The public space has increasingly become a traffic artery, with the middle 3-4 lanes for motor vehicles being a difficult separation to overcome for the marginalized pedestrians and cyclists. Adjacent spaces and squares are unused or still occupied by parked cars.

Despite the many public buildings, there is a lack of freely accessible consumption-free protected spaces

The focus of the design is directed towards the occupation of spaces along the ring road by large-scale structural interventions with publicly accessible uses and a special focus on non-commercial and consumption-free zones.

after successful completion of the course, students are able to methodically develop the design of a building. the students are able to understand design as an integral, at the same time rational as well as creativ work, which under consideration of different - often disparate and divergent - frameworks, which tries to converge these in an architectural project. they are able under consideration of current topics and positions to take their own informed stand and be able to apply this to knowledge their design. they are able to conceive archictectural concepts, develop these in their buildings and make their project visible through presentation with design and detailed plans.

the aim of exploring the lost is the cinematic contextualization of the phenomena of place, space and time.

our urban environment is to be stalked in search of hidden, forgotten, abandoned, repressed, locked away or even undiscovered places and spaces.
the aim is the cinematic-experimental (de)construction of an individual, reflective fictional story for the appropriation, reproduction and/or transformation of such a place/space on a time scale.

macondo - the settlement on the outskirts of vienna, which is not officially called that name, is a place where refugees in austria were settled for decades. since the mid-1950s, refugees with an official status have been accommodated in the former barracks, some for an unlimited period and some for a limited period. in this context, a new architecture should serve as a catalyst for community building. the requirements and functions of this community place will be developed on the basis of research and analysis of the needs and wishes of the users. this should result in a multifunctional design that can flexibly respond to several usage scenarios and thus form a new community space.

experimental development of a pavilion-like spatial structure (free-standing, lightweight building) in public space with versatile spatial and functional configurations. the architectural concept will be developed in line with the proposed programming in public space. the spatial structure development is based on an in-depth analysis of geometric and constructive priniciples.  

the focus of this course is the development of the architectural design in iteration with the supporting structure, which is constantly optimized with regard to geometric criteria of structural performance and constructive design. the investigations are carried out with analogue and digital models, including algorithm-supported planning tools.

as a casestudy, the project is to be planned for a period of one year at various locations in vienna. the design shall be developed up to a 1:1 structure and parts o fit shall be tested das a mock-up.

the design studio will be in english and german.

Poetics of Space - Architecture is frozen Music

The clear demand for what is to be created in this design work is: poetry and beauty.

The author and journalist Günther Nenning proclaimed years ago that "beauty is a human right". If you take that literally, you come across plenty of human rights violations every day. Our country and our cities are getting uglier by the year - where are the poetry and the euphony?

Based on the annual theme "Trespassing Grounds", possible tasks will be discussed and defined and corresponding plots and places in the greater Vienna area will be sought (and/or vice versa):

1 - elite spaces: Areas that are occupied but not accessible to everyone and that have a very narrow understanding of the city.
2 - undefined urban spaces: areas that have not yet been developed and areas between different dedications.
3 - used spaces: existing objects whose uses have an expiry date (e.g. multi-storey car parks whose construction volume is to be reclaimed due to the slowly progressing mobility transition).

Forward-looking and flexible urban development concepts broaden the basis of interventions and changes in the structure of a city, interim uses set impulses.

From J. W. v. Goethe or F. Schiller comes the saying "Architecture is frozen Music" (in German, of course). The interplay of different actors and clever utilisation scenarios as an impulse generator of urban development is one thing, but without "frozen music", poetry and design quality, this will not succeed.

If so, for whom ? What can happen there ? What is necessary for this ?

to mind: to pay attention to sth., to care for sth., to look after sth.

We mind the gap/s - as a basis for the design task, gaps in the public space are traced (= to pay attention) and then dealt with in planning (architectural) and interdisciplinary terms (= to take care).

(= to take care of). The examination of future development is also part of the design task (= to look after).

goals:

After successful completion of the course, students are able to formulate an urban and socially relevant position in the form of an architectural design with a concrete program. Based on a critical analysis of existing spatial and social framework conditions, students are able to consider questions relevant to building construction and a resource-saving planning approach as an integrative component of the architectural concept after completing the design course.

S T A Y C A T I O N – als englische Übersetzung von „Urlaub zu Hause“ und als Vorschlag zur zukunftsfähigen Weiterentwicklung von vacation rückt den Donaukanal als (flüssigen) öffentlichen Raum wieder in das Bewusstsein der Wiener:innen.

Zusammen mit dem Schwimmverein Donaukanal werden die Räumlichkeiten der GB* mit Projekten, Entwürfen, Kollektionen und Bildern von Studierenden der Fakultät Architektur und Raumplanung der TU Wien und Mitgliedern des SVDK bespielt. Die Ausstellung begleitet die 1:1 Umsetzung der Raumstruktur kanalWAL, die zeitgleich am Donaukanal nahe der Rotundenbrücke im 2. Bezirk von Architekturstudierenden und dem Forschungsbereich Hochbau, Konstruktion und Entwerfen (HB2) der TU Wien errichtet wird. Sie gibt zudem Einblick in die Entstehungsgeschichte des kanalWALs und zeigt weitere sozial verträgliche Programme für neue Infrastrukturen am Donaukanal. Entworfen wurden sogenannte daily pleasure infrastructures: Strukturen und Architekturen, die die Qualitäten des öffentlichen Raumes Donaukanal sichtbar machen, stärken und fördern, sowie auch Einladung sind zur freien Benützung des Raumes für Alle ohne Konsumzwang. Was kann die Architekturlehre im kontextuellen Rahmen vom Leitsatz »Weniger ist mehr« bis hin zur Forderung »Luxus für alle« leisten?

Das Buch referenziert die Schwerpunktthemen des Forschungsbereichs Hochbau – Konstruktion und Entwerfen an der TU Wien (Professur Gerhard Steixner) von 2009-2019. Der Fokus liegt auf dem Wohn- und Städtebau, auf den Chancen und Ansprüchen hinsichtlich der Benutzbarkeit des öffentlichen Raums sowie auf dem Experiment als didaktisches Denk- und Lockerungswerkzeug. Differenzierte Positionen und eine Auswahl aus zahlreichen Studierendenprojekten dokumentieren den Versuch, ein Bewusstsein für das Mögliche zu wecken.
