"STADT UND PARK"
Nach einem Brand des Gaswerks in Innsbruck wurde ein kleiner Park in
Pradl, zwischen Leipzigerplatz und Sill, nach Norden ins Gaswerkgelände
erweitert und wurde, neben dem Hofgarten. der zweitwichtigste Park
Innsbrucks. Vereinfacht liegt er zwischen der durch Bahn und Sill
begrenzten Innenstadt und dem Stadtteil Pradl.
Wenngleich nicht alle Parkränder wirklich befriedigend sind, besteht
besonders im Bereich der Pradler Kirche eine städtbaulich völlig un-
befriedigende Situation, die im Rahmen der Entwurfsarbeit neu zu
formulieren ist.
Die Bauten zwischen Kirche und Park - ein Wohnhaus, ein Kindergarten
und eine kleines Imbisslokal - werden im Rahmen der Entwurfsarbeit
fiktiv abgebrochen und sollen, je nach Entwurfsansatz, eventuell in
ähnlicher Größe neu geplant werden und sowohl den Park, die nahe-
gelegene Schule und den Bereich um die Kirche bereichern.
Dabei ist die städtebauliche Achse Richtung Osten, in ein zukünftiges
Entwicklungsgebiet zu berücksichtigen.
Die Entwicklung des Raumprogramms ist Teil der Aufgabe.

Der kanalWAL ist zum Urlaubmachen nach Wien geschwommen und hat sich nahe der Rotundenbrücke ans Ufer gelegt. Für die Passant:innen am Donaukanal schafft er einen erholsamen Platz, einen Ort zum Verweilen und zum phantasievollen Ausbrechen aus dem Alltag.

Der kanalWAL ist das Verbindungsstück vom Land zum Wasser. Er führt die Menschen zum Wasser und das Wasser zu den Menschen. Als offene Raumstruktur ist er eine Einladung zur freien Benützung des Raumes - für Fußgänger:innen und Schwimmer:innen gleichermaßen.

Der kanalWAL ist ein Entwurf für das gute Leben - ein Ort für das allgemeine Wohl, konsumfrei und niederschwellig. Im Vordergrund stehen unter der Überschrift S T A Y C A T I O N der Genuss, die Freude, das lässige Sein.

Allerweltsorte gibt es überall - anonym, langweilig, farblos …

Bei näherer Betrachtung haben auch diese Orte ihre individuelle Geschichte und sind Zeugen unterschiedlicher Entwicklungen, die ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Von welcher Seite man es auch betrachtet, es gibt keinen Stillstand. Veränderungen passieren vor und hinter der Oberfläche und den Fassaden. Es ist wie mit der Zeit, man kann sie nicht aufhalten, aber man kann ein aktiver Teil dieser Veränderungen sein, wenn man aufmerksam ist.

Im Fokus steht, beispielhaft für diese anonymen Entwicklungen im Stadtraum, das Areal einer ehemaligen Industrieanlage, eine Schuhfabrik in Atzgersdorf. Einer der ersten Betonbauten des heutigen Wien, die am Übergang von der Produktion zur Dienstleistung und somit am Übergang des monofunktionalen Raumes zu einem multifunktionalen Stadtraum  stehen, dessen Entwicklung und Veränderungen mittlerweile schon Jahrzehnte andauern und noch lange nicht abgeschlossen sind.

Ziel ist es, auf Grundlage einer Recherche dieser Jahrzehnte währenden Veränderungen und einer stadträumlichen Analyse die momentan richtigen Schlüsse für zukünftige Entwicklungen zu ziehen, mit dem Bewusstsein, dass diese Schlüsse eben nur Momentaufnahmen sind. Daraus sollen sich architektonische Interventionen mit unterschiedlichen Maßstäben entwickeln, die sich mit privaten und öffentlichen Bedürfnissen und Interessen auseinandersetzten und so die Geschichte weiterschreiben.

Seit dem Sommer 2020 spricht der Schwimmverein Donaukanal all jene an, die das urbane Schwimmen in Wien zelebrieren wollen. Nach dem Vorbild des Schweizer Flussschwimmens sowie Initiativen ua in Kopenhagen (Hafenschwimmen) und Berlin (Spreeschwimmen) ist nun auch Wien Teil der

internationalen swim city Bewegung.

STAYCATION will diese Initiative unterstützen und stärken: Kleinmaßstäbliche, architektonische

Intervention sollen die Idee, den Donaukanal als (flüssigen) öffentlichen Raum zu nutzen, fördern und sichtbar machen. Gesucht sind Raumstrukturen von nützlichem Charakter für jedermann und jederfrau, die den öffentlichen Raum sichern, vielleicht sogar aufweiten und Grundstein sind für ein lässiges Sein am und im Wasser. STAYCATION entwickelt Entwürfe für das gute Leben einer zukünftig ent-karbonisierten Gesellschaft, die ihren Urlaub lieber zu Hause verbringt.

Was braucht es für den Urlaub am Donaukanal, wie kann der spontane und informelle Charakter des Kanalschwimmens bewahrt werden und wieviel Infrastruktur ist gerade genug und keinesfalls zu viel? Neben dem Hauptwerkstoff Holz liegt der Fokus auf der Testung von ökologischen / zukunftsfähigen Materialien und Beschaffungsformen (upcycling / recycling / urban mining). Der Entwurf muss sich mit geringstem Budget und einfachem Werkzeug realisieren lassen. Das Entwerfen ist Grundlage für ein 1:1 Entwerfen im S2021.

Hacking Property - Commons im Wohnumfeld

In einer Zeit der Wohnungsknappheit, wirtschaftlichen Druckes und prekären Arbeitsverhältnisse stellt sich immer öfter die Frage nach konsumbefreiten, nichtkapitalistischen Räumen des Zusammenkommens. Besonders im direkten Wohnumfeld spielen gemeinschaftlich organisierte Räume des kollektiven Handelns eine immer größere Rolle für bestimmte (marginalisierte) gesellschaftliche Gruppen. Vor diesem Hintergrund sollen im Zuge des Stegreifentwerfens bereits vorhandene (echte) Commons im Wiener Wohnumfeld und neuen Quartieren gesucht und untersucht, Positionen zu Gemeinschaffen formuliert und neue Ideen für zukünftige kollektive Räume gesponnen werden.

The decarbonized society of the mid-21st century has liberated itself from its dependence on fossil fuels. Fossils first remains only as tale from the past, mobility is de-individualized and of higher intelligence. The city is a green city; space resources from elapsed fossil days are disposable for new public uses of daily needs and pleasure. Petrol stations are just the most obvious option / resource.

For those plots in Vienna, that will have lost their current importance around 2050 and beyond, designs for the good life should be created:  institutions for the common good, a public program for a society that has grown tired of hyper-consumption trying to relocate its cause of happiness.

The student`s independent choice of the site within the set parameters and the answer to the question: “What should we build?” will be the starting point of the design process.

The answer to this question will be located in the conflict zone between nature and architecture, densification and renaturation, resource conservation and construction / shell. Its architectural expression will lead to concrete-utopian, public-social spatial structures of the future: post-fossil, climate-resilient oases for the decarbonized society.

Because: everything could be different. Only positive visions create a positive future.

Der Marktplatz stellt das Modell des öffentlichen Raumes schlecht hin dar und wird als 'früheste Form einer Öffentlichkeit' gesehen. Als d e r klassische Konsumraum, der über den Güter- und Leistungsaustausch ein Eintauchen in das authentische Leben der Stadt ermöglicht, bildet der Markplatz einen markanten Ort in der Stadtphysiognomie und ist somit konstitutives Merkmal für die Stadt.

Die 17 Wiener Detailmärkte mit ihren rund 700 Markständen werden wöchentlich von rd. 360.000 Personen frequentiert. Dennoch ringen die Supermärkte den klassischen Marktplätzen zunehmend die primäre Funktion des lokalen Nahversorgers ab. Dies und wachsende soziale Herausforderungen, wie der Anstieg kultureller Diversität, heterogener Lebensstile und Alltagsroutinen, werfen die Frage auf welche Bedeutung der städtische Marktplatz als reiner Konsumraum heute noch hat und mit welchen Funktionen und baulichen Transformationen sein urbanes Quartier aufgewertet werden kann.

Im Fokus des Entwerfens stehen drei Wiener Marktplätze - der Meidlinger Markt, der Hannovermarkt und der Schwendermarkt. An diesen drei Standorten, die ausreichend stadt- und sozialräumliches Potential aufweisen, sollen öffentliche (Zusatz)Funktionen entwickelt werden, die sich als Motor für eine neue Quartiersentwicklung eignen.
Gefordert sind behutsame und sorgfältige bauliche Interventionen in angemessener stadträumlicher Anordnung und Ausprägung. Mit einer sensiblen Transformation, Erweiterung und Hybridisierung des Bestandes sollen neue Funktionen integriert werden, wobei die wesentlichen Attribute und Charakteristika des Marktes erhalten bleiben sollen.

Funktionelle Vorgabe ist zumindest eine öffentliche Raumeinheit mit thermischer Gebäudehülle für rund 150-200 Personen plus notwendige Nebeneinheiten sowie entsprechend nutzbare Außenflächen für Veranstaltungen.

Based on the students competition sponsored by ProHolz, the task of the design is aimed at an innovative development of system solutions in timber implemented to the extension of existing residential buildings. Innovative concepts in terms of organisation, outdoor and green space, common areas, spatial containment and designing in existing contexts will be applied on three selected residential buildings in Vienna. The inhabitants' sociological meta-level is of crucial importance.

Two existing structures on the Slovak-Austrian border: The Devín Castle,
located high above the junction of the rivers Danube and March; an
abandoned building along the shore, that was completed in 1948 and served
as the central constituent of a natural amphitheater. The „hi-story“ of the two
buildings will be carried on – respectfully but without fear of contact.

Training verschiedener Ausdrucks- und Darstellungsformen.

Erarbeiten von Planungsgrundlagen für das gestellte Thema.

Auf Grundlage individuell zu erarbeitender Parameter sollen eigenständige Positionen formuliert und in adäquater Form präsentiert werden.

Die Konstruktionen sind ausgesprochen leicht, manche fast kühn oder gar gewagt. Der Ressourcenverbrauch ist minimal, nur das notwendigste Material wurde verbaut und doch entstehen die schönsten und großzügigsten Räume, die die Architektur überhaupt hervorbringen kann. Eine intelligente Eleganz oder besser noch: eine elegante Intelligenz wohnt all diesen wunderbaren Follies und Pavillons inne. Man fühlt sich wohl in diesen offenen und luftigen Strukturen, irgendwie befreit und schwerelos und kann sich zur Nutzung alles vorstellen: Feierlichkeiten mit Musik und Tanz, Ausstellungen, auch kleine Messen, Staatsempfänge sogar. Und so leicht wie die Architektur selbst ist es auch, diese Bauten ihrer Bestimmung zu entrücken und an einem anderen Ort, in einer anderen Zeit und für einen anderen Anlass wieder aufzubauen.

Exkursion HB2 SS2018

Die Fakultät „Architektur und Raumplanung“ der TU Wien nimmt unter den Architekturschulen durch ihre historisch hohe Hörerzahl weltweit eine Sonderstellung ein. Eine der problematischeren Auswirkungen ist der nur schwer zu befriedigende Raumbedarf. Derzeit stehen den 5470 inskribierten Studierenden 680m² zur Verfügung, eine Zahl weit unter dem nationalen wie auch internationalen Durchschnitt. Der Ruf nach mehr Zeichensälen wird immer wieder laut.
Eine räumliche Erweiterung – hier in Form einer Expositur – ist eine Antwort auf die Raumfrage: ein Arbeitshaus in studentischer Selbstverwaltung, ein Freiraum abseits der etablierten Strukturen, in dem Denken und Arbeiten im weitesten Sinne möglich ist. Studierende sind PlanerInnen, NutzerInnen und BauherrInnen in einer Person.

Wie die mobile Zukunft aussehen könnte, wird derzeit intensiv verhandelt: technisch (sauberer, leiser, intelligenter), organisatorisch-politisch (multiple Mobilität), aber auch sozial-ethisch (Sharing, Verzicht). Der Status –Quo liegt zwischen dem Slogan „Das Auto muss raus aus der Stadt!“ und global steigenden KFZ-Zulassungszahlen. Eine städtebauliche Vision liegt in der Rückgewinnung des (öffentlichen) Raums: mehr Platz für die Menschen, für Grün, für Fahrräder. Einverstanden! Aber wohin mit dem Ding „Automobil“, denn ganz ohne werden wir in naher Zukunft nicht sein.

Sammelgaragen sind sinnfällig und wirtschaftlich. Im Kollektiven liegt die Zukunft. Aber wie sieht sie aus? Garagenbauwerke sind ihrem Charakter nach lupenreine Zweckbauten - präzise kalkuliert und auf Leistung optimiert. Gleichzeitig sind sie jedoch viel mehr: die Geschichte der modernen Gesellschaft kann auch über die Garage erzählt werden, der Bauaufgabe liegt ein spezielles Narrativ inne. Die Hochgarage steht dabei in einem besonderen Spannungsbogen, der sich zwischen rationellem Kalkül und architektonischer Präsenz aufspannt. Die Struktur ist das Bauwerk, ist die Erscheinung. Mit Ausnahmen ist die Bauaufgabe Garage den Architekten entglitten oder auf eine nachträgliche Fassadenbehübschung marginalisiert. Die Potentiale der Typologie liegen derzeit brach.

The design studio Re-FRAMING THE CITY  THROUGH CINEMATIC METHODOLOGY deals with the question how our own body can function as a tool to experience, texture and measure space in Film. Through the eye of the movie camera we will explore, test, manipulate and disassemble the urban fabric (of Vienna and London/Oxford).

 In short seminars we will talk about theory of film, film syntax and by examining selected Avant-garde films we will understand film as a means to self-reflect the concepts of space within the medium and as a tool to understand and decompose the city by imposing the cinematographic dispositive upon it.

As a consequence of the continuing high growth of european cities, the question of long-term sustainable housing concepts remains in the foreground, and are receiving a renewed political sensitivity through the current large-scale global migratory movements. The emerging discourse on "cheap" building often concludes with baracks, containers or a simple reduction of floor area as solution proposals. It is clear however, that a mere depositing cannot be future-proof. Recent architectural history has addressed the question of "Housing for the Greatest Number" multiple times, but what is a contemporary response in light of cumulative knowledge, advanced technology as well as relative prosperity?

The dictum "highest quality, most affordable building" remains the starting point of this discourse and should be engrained in the collective consciousness of all participants in the building process. Especially architects and planners are called out as comprehensive (and therefore total) planning is the most effecitve tool. Quality is not confined to comfort standards and safety regulations. Anyone can build expensively: This studio sets out to prove the idea, that "Luxury for All" is a promise, which does not have to cost more.

Both aspects mentioned above - highest housing quality and most affordable construction methods will be the focus of this design studio. Starting with an intensive and thorugh examination of the fundamentals: typological, legal and economic aspects influencing form and function, particulary circulation typologies, high-quality (open) spaces as well as performance indicators and economic parameters, e.g. the ratio of residential floor area to building surface area and ciruclation area. This studio raises the claim of superordinate validity and relevance and is therefore site-independent - objectives are the intrinsic qualites in design. 

Housing design for the greatest number requires seriality. Questions of economy of elements and processes must be considered within a narrow cost- and time-frame. Industrial and rational building (state of the art and future visions of prefabrication) will be main topics of the development of the structural concept. This design studio will be accompanied by expert consultants Martin Haferl (structure) and Cornelius Peter (MEP). Furthermore field trips to exemplary buildings and manufacturing processes during the semester are planned.

Wien weist in den Bezirken zwischen Gürtel und Ring ein dichtes und durchmischtes Gewebe auf, welches heute gemeinhin mit dem Begriff Urbanität gleichgesetzt wird. Der robuste Baustein dieses Gewebes ist der städtische Block, die Parzelle ist seine kleinste Einheit. Ausgangspunkt ist die Analyse des vorhandenen städtischen Programms und seiner gründerzeitlichen Dichte durch das Sezieren eines exemplarischen Blocks im 7. Bezirk (Neubaugasse - Mariahilferstrasse - Zollergasse - Lindengasse). Der Block wird zerlegt in seine Parzellen, die Parzellen in die Einzelkomponenten der Nutzung, Erschließung, Baumasse, Freiraum. Auf den gewonnen Erkenntnissen aufsetzend,  untersuchen wir die symbiotischen Potentiale öffentlicher und halböffentlicher Nutzungen und Raumstrukturen, die auf der Größe einer städtischen Parzelle (Neubaugasse 16, 750m2 Grundfläche sind  zu bebauen mit der aus der Analyse hervorgehenden mittleren GFZ des Blocks) in Toplage sowohl dem wirtschaftlichen Druck stand halten können, als auch einen Mehrwert für die Stadt und den öffentlichen Raum bereitzustellen wissen.

Ziel der Lehrveranstaltung ist der Entwurf eines komprimierten hybriden Gebäudes mit öffentlichen und halböffentlichen Nutzungen im Sinne kluger und sogar gewagterer Kombinationen von temporären Wohnstrukturen (Kapselhotel /Mini-Hotel / Boardinghouse) mit zusätzlichen, potentiell synergetischen Programmen (Stichwort: shared economy, soziale Verantwortung) auf einem Filet-Grundstück im dichten städtischen Kontext der Wiener Gründerzeit  im 7.Bezirk (Neubaugasse).

In cooperation with the " Institute of Interdisciplinary Construction Process Management, Industriebau" (Prof. Achammer) and the " Institute of Structural Engineering, Betonbau" (Prof. Kollegger) this studio should explore the potential of a synergetic design process due to collaboration across different engineering disciplines.

The goal of this studio is to investigate different possilbilities of urban densification and the integration of mixed usage within a multifunctional hybrid building. Functions to be included will range from supermarket, kindergarden, office space, sports facilities to residential usage.

this studio contains stimulation in critical dispute providing planning tasks, founding and the development of social and self-competence and team ability. training of various expressions and forms of presentation.

The new Central Library should be much more than a traditional library. It should be a dynamic entity comprised of the physical spaces themselves as well as technology, library collections, staff, cooperation partners and clients. Libraries are no longer being thought of as a musty, silent holding area for books. Instead, technology is paving the way for libraries to emerge as a digital repository of information, gaming areas, and community centers. The goal is to create a space that emphasizes natural light, sustainability, education, and community while representing a new understanding of what the future of a library will be.
The new library should meet the following requirements.
• responds to the challenges posed by the unique location and positions itself consistently in relation to its environment 
• a form and language that reflects the functions which it includes
• high-quality functional and technically and spatially flexible framework for cutting-edge and adaptable library operations

the world is changing. people are forced to leave their habitats and are looking for new ones. pluralism, cultural contexts or openess for human experiences can be the cause to rethink social spaces (theoratically and practically) and to use its potentials.

how welcoming is a country, a street, a building? are we ready to provide high quality spaces for this social task?

the designs should therefore redevelop the zone above the top floors of innercity districts and provide new typologies with flexible spacial organisation for housing and social and public institions. another focus should be on the communicative aspects between street, building, and „social airspace“ above the city.

The region around the national park Gesäuse in Styria is a divers and fascinating natural and cultural landscape. The ragged cliffs of the Gesäuse mountain range with its foaming river rapids, which give this region its name, serve as the backdrop to a rich cultural-historic fabric, ranging from sights such as the baroque Admont Abbey, containing the largest monastic library in the world, to the industrial complex of the Erzberg, where iron ore has been extracted since the 11th century.

A new visitor centre shall represent and present this region to not only tourists as a starting point for exploration and discovery, but also serve educational purposes as a small seminar and research centre with simple accomodation for about 15 people - the overall size of the center will be around 500m². The location within the park means that the building will be autonomous, being independent from grid-energy sources, sewage systems and other common infrastructure. Special considerations have therefore to be made in regard to design as well as construction.

Apart from technical considerations this course will also look at the relationship between man and nature, a recurring topic in architecture. Building in the mountains has fascinated architects throughout the ages, ranging from the ecclesiastic metaphor of the cathedral as a mountain to the coalescence of architecture and nature in Bruno Tauts "Alpine Architecture" or Oligiati's and Caminada's work in the Alps.

Das 1:1 Entwerfen ist Ausgangspunkt für Strategien zur Entdeckung und Verstärkung der urbanen Energien, die an Orten erzeugt werden, an denen sich die verschiedensten gesellschaftlichen Akteur_innen treffen, überlagern und in Interaktion miteinander treten.

The Hanappi Stadium located to the west of Vienna is one of the most important soccer stadiums of the city. The stadium has been erected in the 70s but despite various modernization measures has not been able to accommodate the full range of requirements of a contemporary sports venue. The stadium has reached its seating capacity and the neighborhood has to cope with increased traffic and noise disturbances. Compromises made during planning such as orientation and traffic organisation are still having an impact today. A new stadium building currently seems to be the best alternative.

PLAY! Experiment Kindergarten is a critical and playful approach towards kindergarden design. Through a personal approach towards the educational concepts of kindergarten and the resulting analysis of 'playing and learning in a community'  an (individual) design strategy for a kindergarden should be achieved, beyond existing, traditional conventions.

In cooperation with the " Institute of Interdisciplinary Construction Process Management, Industriebau" (Prof. Achammer) and the " Institute of Structural Engineering, Betonbau" (Prof. Kollegger) this studio should explore the potential of a synergetic design process due to collaboration across different engineering disciplines. In cooperation with TU Cottbus and ETH Zurich students will plan and create short films about residental buildings in Vienna.
Conceptually, the course focuses on penetration of private space. Space that normally is not accessible to the public.

Concepts of penetration of non-public space will be developed by media approach.
Two workshops (one week each) will focus on methods and technical approaches regarding penetration of space by film and digital media:

The aim of the 're-housing' is to design and project a socially assisted living home for homeless people in Vienna Donaustadt.

'Housing is a basic social need of the people. The apartment is considered to be the main place of personal independence and individuality. '

Acute homelessness is a conditional phenomenon of poverty and has a particularly tragic form of social exclusion. homelessness applies to people without permanent accommodation. homelessness also applies to people staying in temporary shelters, emergency shelters, heat rooms or other low-threshold facilities. By now around 9.000 homeless people are assisted in Vienna. The number redoubled since 2006. The main causes of homelessness in Vienna are evictions as a result of divorce, unemployment, lack of financial security, mental and physical illnesses as well as former detainment.

The Karlsplatz has been an old topic of urban planning in Vienna. It has been the center of an ongoing architectural discourse since Otto Wagner which includes a number of competitions, realized post-war projects as well as current plans and interventions. Generations of architects can look back on controversies surrounding this urban space: Wagner's "Stadtmuseum", Lippert's Winterthur building, the design of the public spaces, which "shocked" Holzmeister as well as the recent debates about the Kunsthalle.

The Karplsplatz itself is the home of an especially large number of public cultural institutions, including the  Musikverein, the Künstlerhaus, the Wien Museum, St.Charles Church, and the Vienna Buisness School on one end and a number of TU buildings as well as the Secession and the Naschmarkt on the other end of this urban space. At the same time it is one of the main traffic junctions of the city, connecting and separating the Inner City from the fourth district at the same time. A drug scene, heightend police presence, children's playgrounds and public events around the year complete the picture.

The history of the Vienna Museum is at least as rich as the history of the Karlsplatz itself. Otto Wagner provoked a decade long debate with his "agitation project" which resulted in two competitions (1902, 1911). A concrete building  however was only realized in the 50s when Oswald Haerdtl won a competition which attracted a number of leading architects of that time (including Holzmeister, Schwanzer and Boltenstern). 

Today the Vienna Museum not only houses the historical collections of the City of Vienna. Since the privatization of the responsible municipal department (MA10), a new legal entity "Museums of the City of Vienna" carries out the administration of a number of cultural institutions of the city. These include the Hermesvilla, a large number of former homes of famous musicians, urban archeological sites and some speciality museums. Next to the collection and documentation activities the museum is also actively engaged in research.

Museum buildings as a typology has undergone significant changes in the course of history. Their origins often lie in private collections at court, their contents following the personal tastes of the collector. Educational and in further course also scientific aspects came to the foreground during enlightment. Since  the Bilbao Guggenheim led to economic recovery of a heavily blighted industrial region, political and economical aspects dominate the discourse of new museum buildings. Thus however the discussion of the actual complex requirements for such a building falls short: the publicly visible spaces form only a small (albeit important) part of a museum, the large number of remaining spaces being allocated for research, administration and proper storage of the collection objects. The organisation of these complex functions as well as the coordination of the specific space requirements ranging from public to private are an especially exciting and interesting challenge for any architect.

Development of a structure for a pavilion by application of the material  Supertex (Info: www.supertex.at) The Supertex material consists of flexible linear elements that can form a structure by woven application. By application of heat the former flexible elements get stiff in a final configuration. The characteristics of the material define design immanent parameters like curvature and density of the woven pattern that need to be considered in the early design process.

Furthermore, we need to develop a composite-like application: a skin needs to be developed that covers the woven structure and will be used as an interface to dispplay information and digital media.

Portability, assembly and dismounting Processes as well as consepts for future use and transportability need to be considered.

The "Wiener Stadionbad" is next to the city swimming pool venue for national and international competitions, but there can only take place under the open sky. Since its opening in 1931, used as a public bathhouse, it was always again in the spotlight of many major events.

Das Projekt der TU Wien wurde für die ‚Morocco 2013 Mars Analog Field Simulation“ angenommen. Basierend auf derzeitigen Plänen von Weltraumorganisationen wird ein zusätzliches Crew-Support-Element für eine Mars Mission vorgeschlagen: Eine mobile und schnell einsatzbereite Notfallunterkunft - für Situationen in denen eine sofortige Rückkehr zur Station bzw. zum Rover notwendig wäre aber nicht möglich ist. Diese soll kompakt, leicht und von einem Astronauten transportiert werden können, ähnlich zu einer „Rucksack-“ oder „Koffer-Typologie“.

Prototypische Entwicklung und Fertigung einer faltbaren pneumatischen Struktur als Minimalunterkunft für zukünftige Marsmissionen.  2013 soll diese Struktur von Studierenden während einer Feldsimulation in Marokko getestet werden.
Bei dem zu testenden Prototyp handelt es sich um ein vereinfachtes Mock-up einer faltbaren pneumatischen Struktur. Eine äußere Schicht bietet Schutz (vor Sandstürmen, Strahlung, Abrieb, etc.) und kann an die Topologie des Untergrunds angepasst werden (Felsen, Unebenheiten, etc.) Das Volumen und die Form der primären Struktur kann je nach Aktivität der Astronauten angepasst werden.

The aim of this course are the design and technical specifications of an „Indoor Swimming Pool“ and its adjacent structure. Besides the architectural approach, the design is meant to deal with various social interests and constraints in the urban fabric nearby Spittelau area.

The conception should also be offering great solutions for an efficient building energy operating, an elaborated supporting structure system,the use of unit prefabrication construction method and above all, high-end construction-details.

The subtle application of materials and resources should be considered during the whole design process.

Just a three days journey with a spaceship from earth the moon beckons. Only 12 people so far – American astronauts – have set foot on the moon. Since December 1972 no one again.

2012: The Space Agencies NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, ISRO, JAXA, CNSA as well as private enterprises are working on plans for future missions to the moon.
2050: An international lunar base has been established – people work, research and live ...

In the first phase of the studio a settlement strategy based on a hypothetical scenario derived from astronauts’ experiences shall be developed. The emphasis of the second phase of the studio shall then be the design and the construction-related implementation of the research station.

The re-thinking and resolution of design challenges through a change of perspective (i.e. extraterrestrial environment) will be a critical part of this design studio. This course will be accompanied by theme-specific lectures and workshops with space experts.

The campus of the University of Music and Performing Arts was established in 1999 on the former site of the Veterinary University in the 3rd District in Vienna, built in 1821-1823. Over the past few years, various departments of the University were moved in the renovated existing and new buildings.
Three additional institutes of the University of Music and Performing Arts (Institute for composition and electro acoustics,  Institute for keyboard instruments and the Institute for Film and Television - Film Academy Vienna) shall be moved to a building on the campus with a total floor space of 3,400 m² (= 4,900 m² net floor area).
The task of this design studio is the design of a new building to accommodate the new departments.  Within the multifunctional building design specific spatial and functional requirements shall be integrated, such as specially equipped rooms including a large concert hall (for orchestra) with adjustable acoustics for all styles, a great sound projection theater and large and small studios and audio labs.

The topic of kinematic space structures incorporates manifold research issues and collaboration across different engineering disciplines therefore implicates a wide range of new challenges. This studio should explore the potential of such constructions as an architectural object. An analytical research of basic kinematic concepts should unroll in an innovative design approach with experimental character.  The design process should implicate the development of a movable architectural structure with particular user implementation.

Design of a movable, retractable roof structure for the courtyard 1 in the main building of the TU-Vienna to establish an adaptable environment for various temporary social activities like operas, KinderUni, concerts and exhibitions.

The design process should implicate the study of specific case studies and basic kinematic concepts and include either critical reflections or experimentations with the ideas and techniques revealed. Further development includes the appropriate use of materials, constructive elaboration and detailing.

The documenta in Kassel is regarded as the most important recurring exhibition of modern and contemporary art worldwide next to the Biennale of Venice. In the past containers have served as places of communication and exchange of ideas for the over 700.000 international visitors during this 100 day venue. These diverse functions, ranging from a lecture room, an event stage, a press center, a book and gift shop, restaurants and archives to other secondary rooms shall now be integrated into a temporary  „center of information and communication“ of around 1000 m². Urban satellites, which shall be dealt with exemplarily, complement the design program. A total sum of 7000 Euro is being awarded for this international student competition.

Important topics will be all aspects of temporary buildings, ranging from appropriate use of material and construction to assembly and disassembly, but also sustainability, re-use and recycling for which innovative solutions and strategies are sought. 

The Bibliothekshof originated in the 19th Century due to the construction of the ballroom wing, the New Castle and the Palm House complex to the 18th Century originating court library. The four-sided enclosed courtyard is one of the varied courtyards of the overall Hofburg. The limitations in the height , as well as opening south to the castle garden and the ring road are the main characteristics of the square.

The space program was referring mainly to the adjacent National Library, which has as one of the eight federal museums not its own exhibition space. A functional involvement of neighboring institutions, such as the convention center was not excluded. Generally [nbsp] was to develop a structure that can be used mainly for temporary exhibitions or as a space for events, parties and balls.

Das Künstlerhaus in Wien harrt seit Jahren einer dringend notwendigen Sanierung und Modernisierung. Mit der Schaffung neuer Ausstellungsräumlichkeiten, die sich für die Präsentation zeitgenössischer, künstlerischer Positionen eignen, sollte von den Studierenden ein Beitrag zur Aufwertung dieser Institution geleistet werden.

Ziel des Entwerfens war daher der architektonische Entwurf neuer Ausstellungsräumlichkeiten sowie erweiterter Funktionen wie Cafe, Bar, Verkaufsbereich und Leseraum für das Künstlerhaus Wien unter Berücksichtigung funktioneller, gestalterischer und hochbautechnischer Aspekte.

Auf Basis einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit dem Bestand sollte eine fundierte, konzeptionelle Grundlage für einen An-, Um- und/oder Erweiterungsbau erarbeitet werden. Bestehende, sowie zur Verfügung stehende Räumlich-/Baulichkeiten sollten intensiv architektonisch und funktionell seziert, analysiert und hinterfragt werden. Das Projekt sollte entsprechend den architektonischen und funktionellen Anforderungen an einen Ausstellungsbau sowie an ein konstruktives und hochbautechnisches Konzept ausgearbeiten werden.

Schlusspräsentation im k/haus mit:

In Kooperation mit dem math.space installieren StudentInnen der Abteilung Hochbau 2 der TU Wien einen Pavillon aus reduzierten Stahlblech-Tetraedern, die auf dem faszinierenden Phänomen des umstülpbaren Würfels von Paul Schatz basiert. Die Wolke ist zu durchschreiten und anhand von 1:1 Modellen selbst zu erfahren.

Für den Architekten wirft die Planung eines Kindergartens vor allem die Frage auf, wie sich sozialpädagogische Visionen und Arbeitsgrundsätze mit Raum und Architektur 'verbinden' bzw. 'ergänzen' lassen?

Vor diesem Hintergrund und der Fragestellung, unter welchen Planungsdeterminanten eine ökologische und ökonomische 'Baukastenlösung' im Kindergartenbau ohne Beeinträchtigung der Qualitätsstandards erzielt werden kann, war das Ziel einen Kindergarten in der Schukowitzgasse in 1220 Wien zu entwerfen.

Entwurfsgrundlagen wie die Anzahl der Gruppenräume, die Geschossanzahl etc. wurden aus dem Auslobungstext des, mit dem Entwerfen gleichzeitig stattfindenden Realisierungswettbewerb zu diesem Grundstück entnommen.

Anforderungen an einen energieeffizienten Betrieb und die Kriterien der ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit sowie Fragen der Bauteilvorfertigung, der Konstruktion und der hochbautechnischen Detaillierung standen dabei ebenso im Vordergrund wie die Nutzungsflexibilität und der sinnvolle Einsatz von Materialien und Resourcen.
